The Sou’Westers recently returned from South Africa – a tour which was outstanding in all respects. Peter’s excellent and erudite tour report can now be found in the Tours section.

Last year’s tour was another blessed generally with good weather and lots of runs. We had a healthy influx of new players, who we hope will be playing again in 2012, and the continuing trend of next generation Sou’Westers contributed widely to a successful tour. Read the rest of this entry »
Peter was born on 11 March 1934 and died on 7 April 2011.
He was educated at Connaught House School, Bishop’s Lydiard, and, like his father, Radley College. Born in Wellington, he lived in and around it all his life. He worked for what is now Swallowfield in Wellington and Global Chemicals in Bampton, Devon. And no doubt other places too. Read the rest of this entry »
The 2012 AGM will be held at Jamies, 47 Ludgate Hill, EC4M 7JZ at 7pm on Wednesday 7th March. Dinner will be followed by the meeting, when the Cape Town tour will be high on the agenda. Members planning to attend who have not yet placed food orders with Martin are requested to do so as soon as possible.
The Fixtures page has now been updated with the 2012 worldwide fixtures list. Use the above menu or follow this link to the 2012 fixtures. There is still time to join the South Africa Tour and those interested should contact Stewart asap.
Members should soon be in possession of the 2011 club yearbook and are requested to complete and return the accompanying availability form for the Western Tour as soon as possible. Please direct queries to the captain, contact details on this website.
Davy’s wine bar provided an excellent venue for the 2011 club AGM, held on Friday 4th March. Good food and wine followed a concise meeting that saw the club elect four new members and report a surplus for the previous year.
Stewart reported on the positive response to the 2012 tour to South Africa – details to be found elsewhere in the news section. The club’s officers were re-elected and Martin confirmed that accommodation for the 2011 Western Tour will be provided by Exeter Cathedral school.
Thanks go to Mike for organising this successful event.
The Sou’Westers’ AGM will be at 7pm at Davy’s wine bar, 10 Creed Lane, London EC4M 8SH, followed by dinner at 8pm.
We have a private room in the wine bar, which is off Ludgate Hill, near St Paul’s Cathedral. It is not very far from the previous venue at The Green. The significant advantage of this venue is that there is no minimum spend, which has been a worry on each previous occasion that the AGM has been held in London.
It serves a draught beer under its own name which it describes as “light and hoppy”. Food orders are requested in advance, to Mike.
The Sou’Westers’ last toured South Africa in 1999, over the Easter break, playing 7 games against Fish Hoek, Groot Drakenstein, Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, Western Province XI, Hermanus, Claremont and Techs. C.C. The tour was a great success and there has long been interest amongst many club members for a return visit.
A similar tour is now proposed for Easter 2012 . Planning and negotiations have been underway since March 2010. We will play similar teams again, being based in Cape Town but this time on the coast at Sea Point. This again promises to be an unforgetable tour.
Players and Club Members will shortly be e-mailed with more details including timing and basic costs. With this information at hand, which will cover senior players, members and families with young children, I hope you will be persuaded to join the tour.

The 2010 Western Tour has drawn to a successful conclusion with Sou’westers having won eight out of thirteen games played. The results and averages can be found in the Tours section – one or two old bowlers showing that they have still ‘got it’.

Twenty seven decades-worth of President and President Emeritus illuminated Lights (I will not say “flooded into Lights” – that might touch a few nerve endings) simultaneously in late July, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Read the rest of this entry »
For those who either keep or remember our last yearbook I am afraid the Captain’s Report is rather repetitive. With the tour again blighted by appalling weather, I make no apologies in repeating the opening paragraph with only an increase in the number of games affected and a change to our accommodation venue.
